2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness- NIV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [a]instruction in righteousness,- NKJ
The bible is written history, poetry, doctrine and a record of God's direct revelation to men and women from Adam and Eve in Genesis to John in the Book of Revelation. It all is the inspired Word of God but serves different purposes. We have a record of Gods words and commands to his poeple. The truths and promises endure but the direct application can change. For example we are no longer under the covenant of the LAW. We are now under Grace in and through Jesus Christ. The Law still endures but how it is applied to the daily life of God's people has changed. How is beyond the scope of this short post. The Bible speaks and even though it was written by humans those words are from the creator. A magnificent revelation into the personality of a personal, loving and just God who will demand justice but show merciful love.
In fact, Jesus says to the Pharisees in Matthew 15:3 "But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" The Bible is the written Word of God but Jesus is the Word come in the flesh John 1:14 says " And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." God Father , Son and Holy Spirit speak through the Bible. All other sources that claim it is God speaking should be judged by his word. Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Study the bible. Paul even went so far as to say even ignore me if I differ from the bible! He warns in Galatians 1:8 “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
God has spoken through men,women,dreams, angels,bushes,acts of nature,writing on walls, in the flesh(John 1:14) , and Ect... Each had to be tested by his prior Words. Psalm says in 19 1-3 "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard." God, however mostly speaks through his written Word the bible. For thousands of years of history it has been rare for God to speak in a miraculous way to multitudes or even a prophet. But he does still speak ; through the Bible. He also now lives in every Christian- John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.ESV John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.ESV
God can speak in anyway that he wants. No one can limit him! He now speaks, as before, mostly through his written word. Let us not neglect the major way he speaks THROUGH THE BIBLE HIS WRITTEN WORD. Judge all "revelations" by the BIBLE. As Dallas Willard's said on reading a bible verse "Read the passage slowly,considering the invitation that reading scripture is "encountering God himself or hearing his voice" - Dallas Willard Hearing From God. What a magnificent gift from God to every person; his actual Words! Praise God. Read the bible and let us all try to listen!
Send the Word of God to others!
