Hosanna on Palm Sunday

 Hosanna on Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is a week before Easter resurrection Sunday. When Jesus Road into Jerusalem he came to celebrate Passover and become the Passover Lamb; John 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” and Matthew 21 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:  5 “SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, ‘BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.’” 6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. 8Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. 9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”

This event was a fulfillment of bible prophecy regarding the coming of the messiah.  According to one Jewish messianic Christian web page; Jewish rabbi scholars were torn by 2 prophecies of the Messiah. The first from Zechariah 9:9 was fulfilled when Jesus road in on a donkey. The second had the Messiah return a conquering king : Dan 7:13 which says “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him.14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one. Which shall not be destroyed. Continued to watch, They felt that the messiah would only return in the cloud to reign if Israel was worthy, if not he would return in peace.

Sadly, they were right it was the rejection of Jesus and the sin of the majority of Israel that allowed his crucifixion and the opening by God's will of salvation to all humankind.  We were all unworthy and needed The Son to come in peace with an offer of salvation and not judgement. When Jesus rode in on a donkey that symbolized in the ancient culture of the East a king offering peace, if he had rode in on a horse or war horse he would have come with war and judgement. When Jesus returns a second time he will not come in peace : Revelation 19:11-16  11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He [a]had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written :New King James Version

When the people cried Hosanna they were offering praise and asking for Jesus to save them.*1  These were people under the rule of ROME and hoped for the messiah to return as King to save them from their Roman conquerors. Jesus came to save them and all humankind from a worst enemy SIN and DEATH. Palms  were a sign of victory  the ancient Greek gave those who were victorious in the sporting events a crowns of palms leaves .  The people threw their coats and palms before Jesus in celebration , hope and recognition of their King and Savoir; who they thought would bring physical and not just spiritual deliverance. Jesus first coming on a donkey was for spiritual victory ; the second will be physical when he establishes his kingdom earth.  In heaven we who are saved will and hold palms of victory  and the 24 elders will throw their crown at God's feet ; Revelation 7:9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. Revelation 4:10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11  “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

To be saved call out to Jesus "save me"! "Hosanna"! accept his as Savoir and Lord. Through down your " palm and " coats" and follow.

1. https://www.biblestudytools.com/bible-study/topical-studies/what-does-hosanna-mean.html ". Hosanna Means "Salvation! Thank You!" Throughout different translations and edits, the original plea to “please, save us!” changed to a proclamation of “Salvation! Thank you!” We read above in Psalms 118:25, “Please, Lord, please save us. Please give us success...
