Lesson 4 Getting to know the Holy Spirit

1. The Holy Spirit draws us John 16:8

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He  will take of Mine and declare it to you.

2. The Holy Spirit indwells us John 14:17; 1 Corinthians 3:16

John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? New King James Version

John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The unsaved those who are no redeemed cannot have the Holy Spirit dwell in them. He will reveal the truth to them but they must choose to listen.

3. The Holy Spirit empowers us  Acts 1:8  John 6:38; Ephesians 3:20; Phillpians 2:13

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

Phillpians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

4. The Holy Spirit helps us John 14:26

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

5. The Holy Spirit guides us John 17:17b

John 17:15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

Each True believer in Jesus Christ is justified when redeemed. They are declared righteous by the father. Then they must live to  become more like Christ who is like the father. This is called sanctification. Dictionary defines "Sanctify": set apart as or declare holy; consecrate:cause to be or seem morally right or acceptable

John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

- When a person witnesses or the Word is preached the Holy Spirit will convict the person who hears or reads the WORD.

6. The Holy Spirit intercede for us  Romans 8:27b

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

7. The Holy Spirit fills us Ephesians 4:31-32; Galatians 5:16-25

Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

The Holy Spirit can fill true believers sometimes but he never leaves. In the old testament the spirit would leave some  like king SAUL. Others like king DAVID he would not leave. When filled David prophesied ,when filled Samson had Holy Spirit super strength. David is a type of Christian ! He sinned BUT repented. True Christians need to forsake sin and ask be filled again.

1 Samuel 16 :12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward(HE NEVER LEFT). So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

You can have the Holy Spirit but not be filled .When filled you exhibit the fruit of the spirit and spiritual gifts.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Additional points:

HOLY SPRIT IS GOD- He is part of the TRINITY( FATHER SON and HOLY SPRIT)

Acts 4:32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

Acts 5:3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”The New King James Version

Peters statement shows lying to Holy Spirit is the same as lying to God. He is part of the TRINITY. The Holy Spirit is not an IT but a person !! He is not A spirit but THE SPRIT!

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

Also the words  of Jesus  in John 16:7 "another Helper" shows that Jesus was speaking of someone like him so "GOD."

Luke 1:35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.  He did the work of the virgin birth.

He not a FORCE he can be grieved :

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

He comforts:

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Father - source all things - planned salvation

Son - channel all things   the way salvation

Holy Spirit- agent of all things - holy spirit is the power

"Being filled with the Holy Spirit means to be under the influence or control of the Holy Spirit of God. It involves repentance of sin1, asking God to reveal sin that rules our lives, and submitting to the presence, power and purpose of the Holy Spirit5. It is a contrast to being filled with wine 34, which affects everything in a person3. All Christians have the Spirit, but not all Christians are filled with the Spirit2. Being filled with the Spirit empowers a follower of Jesus to live the life God intended for them."
